I fell back asleep this morning and spent most of my day either in the tub until I pruned or studying until I was tired enough to nap. Savanna knocked on my door after the sun had set to see if I was okay. I assured her that I was and took melatonin, hoping to sleep a little longer tonight.

Amelia and my dad had both called and texted yesterday and today, but I had no energy to call back. Amelia was worried about me and wanted me to come home. Fall break was right after finals though, the first week of November, and I had already planned on flying home—hopefully with Phoenix.

The thought of bringing Phoenix home to meet my dad and Amelia made my stomach slightly unclench. I silently started making a list of things we would have to do while we were there: Sky Bar, Lovers Key Beach, getting pizza from Capone’s.

I fell asleep and dreamt of that. Amelia’s reaction seeing him for the first time, my dad teaching him to cook something truly Italian. Possibly our first time being on the beach after dark…

I awoke the next morning and looked around at the daylight around my room. I did it, I slept a full night without nightmares. I plopped back onto my pillows and froze when I heard a light snoring. I looked over my bed and found Savanna sleeping on the floor, in the same spot that Phoenix had slept. Must be a Nightling thing, I thought as I stepped around her to go to the bathroom.

When I emerged, face and hair done, Savanna was up and making my bed. “Good morning!” she said and smiled at me. “You look like a new person. It’s amazing what sleep can do,” she prattled on.

I was still surprised she slept by my side all night. Maybe I needed to be open-minded, maybe she really was sorry. “Yeah, I’m feeling okay today,” I said and walked into the closet to get dressed.

“Where are we going today?” Savanna asked when I stepped out of the closet in my skinny jeans and NASA T-shirt.

“I need to go to the store,” I said, forgetting that she would probably be going with me.

“Okay, let me take a shower and I’ll go with you!” she said with a strange enthusiasm.

I smiled at her. “Um, sure.”

Savanna bounded into the room Phoenix was staying in and closed the door. I sat down at the bar and made a list of things to get while Savanna was in the shower. After twenty minutes, I decided to call my dad while I waited.

The phone didn’t ring long before he picked up.

“There you are!” he said.

“Sorry, I’ve been swamped over here,” I partially lied.

My dad laughed. “I know you have, hun, how is school? Your professors getting any better yet?”

“Yea, well at least Mr. Jacksmith is. Mrs. Saunders still hates my guts. But I’ve got As in both classes, so that’s okay,” I joked.

“I knew you would show them up.
